Chesapeake Fields was founded to find new, workable ways to help farmers become more profitable — which in turn, helps us all to preserve our farmland, our open spaces, our environment and our lifestyle. Through its research Chesapeake Fields has come to recognize and support these views:

  • Agriculture is the preferred use of our land.Decreased agriculture profitability encourages sprawl and non-agriculture uses of our land.
  • Chesapeake Fields Institute works to help farm families increase profits and to educate citizens & future leaders of the important role agriculture plays in their community’s health and economy.
  • Value-added is one path to increased agriculture profitability.
  • Completed research points to Identity Preserved (IP) grains as a growing niche market.
  • Chesapeake Fields is a regional economic development project that will benefit all of the region and especially its farm families.
  • Community members have a strong interest in preserving the “sense of place” agriculture creates on Delmarva.

Agriculture/Visitor Center Land Equity Drive

Chesapeake Fields Institute believes an agriculture/visitor center is needed to educate our communities, our citizens, and our future leaders of the importance and value of preserving and investing in America’s existing farmlands. CFI will fulfill this mission by establishing a permanent location for an agricultural/visitor center and product processing facilities.

CFI has a signed an option to purchase property (Parcel A) for $1.4 million by March 2006. The property is 83 acres located at the north-east corner of US Route 301 and MD Route 291, west of Millington, Maryland. The property meets these established parameters:

  • Located on a major highway - US Route 301
  • Visible from US Route 301 since that roadway allows only limited signage
  • Near an overpass for safe entry of traffic
  • Has municipal water and sewage available

Soil scientists have determined 70 acres are useable; there are 11 acres of wetlands on the north side and 2 acres of highly erodeable land on the east side adjacent to MD Route 291. An additional 50 acres (Parcel B) north of Parcel A.
